Lake Havasu and Desert Skies

Image Description

Trying desperately to get a feel for medium-format landscapes. I’ve been shooting FF 35 format for years.

Hi Fred. Welcome to NPN. I love a good sunset and this one certainly seems to fill the bill. I really like the way the bare ground has picked up the colors and the reflections in the water are excellent. To me, the image looks like it could use a bit more room on the bottom, mainly because your foreground looks like it’s just barely sticking up into the frame.

I would suggest that this image would get a lot more and better comment if it were in the Landscape forum. While there is the one tower showing and I think there are some rooftops on the farther shore, they don’t constitute enough of a human element to matter under the definitions for landscape images. If you’re ok with that, I’ll move it.

Dennis:
Please move it as necessary. Thank you for your help.

It’s been moved, Fred.

Dennis:
Thank you.

I have updated the image from 39:15 to 3:2 and it’s a later image.

I do prefer the composition on the second, Fred. Beautiful image from a bird photographer’s slant.

Dennis: Thank you for the kind words. I’m also a bird photographer since 2002 and acquisition of my first digital camera. We happened to have severe drought conditions in our area that year and it resulted in loads of hummingbirds coming to our feeder in the Colorado mountains.

Hi Fred,

I’m glad @Dennis_Plank moved this image here. It’s a bang-up landscape, and small areas of “hand of man” that don’t dominate the scene are fine. I remember your post awhile back from the Catalinas, and I enjoyed that. It’s nice to see another AZ image. My first 1 1/2 working after graduating was in Parker, and we lived hear the dam and Lake Havasu. I remember some outstanding sunsets.

This one comes together nicely. There’s a lot of interest in the land portion, and great color in the sky and lake reflection. I love the way the sweep of the clouds mimics the sweep of the shore.

I have no experience with medium format (I wish I did!), so I’m no help there.

There’s maybe a little haloing at the edge of the lake? Those areas seem a bit brighter than I’d expect comparing them to the sky.

I find it challenging to get the level of saturation my eye remembers without an image going a bit nuclear. I think that may be happening a bit here, especially in that upper right corner. It might be worth playing with selectively reducing the saturation a tad. Here’s a rough go as an example to compare.

John: Thank you for the comments. I’m delighted you enjoyed the Catalina photo. I see the haloing too. I’ll go back and work on it again. Probably got sloppy with the masking. Saturation is always the most difficult adjustment for me. I sometimes get carried away but I have cut back on it a lot since early days. Thank you for the sample. I’ll need to open it up and compare to see the differences. We get to Lake Havasu and Tucson a couple of times per year. Sometimes Sedona as well. It’s always fun to watch the desert sunsets develop.
