Lens choice— Yellowstone

Which would be the better lens choice for Yellowstone ( using a canon r5 mark2 — full frame)— 100-500 mm or 150-600.

Hi Judy,
When I was at Yellowstone photographing the wildlife I used my 150-600 with my Canon R5. I had some other telephoto lenes with me but found that I need more focal length of the lens to me so that I would be respect the wildlife by not being too close to them. Hope this info helps you.

Welcome to NPN, Judy. There’s really not a huge amount to choose between those two lenses. Personally, I’d go with whichever focuses quickest on your camera. I think there are enough pixels in the R5 that you should be able to crop for the extra reach if you choose the 100-500. I’d also be sure to take a wider lens for occasional close encounters. Sometimes the wildlife can come very close to your vehicle, and you’ll also want to take some scenic shots unless you’re totally devoted to critter photography.

Hi Judy. Welcome to NPN. I took my 100-500 last summer to Yellowstone. It is amazing. I also had a 1.4 tele-extender which gave me even more range when I needed it. The only problem with the 1.4 TE is that you lose the first 300 mm altogether, so it becomes a 300-700 lens. As Dennis stated make sure you bring a wider lens for the landscapes too.

Interesting. I don’t have the extender— I have the extender for the sigma 150-600 and feel that the extra 140mm doesn’t get me much more reach— and there is loss of quality too. What do you think of the extender on the100-500? Does it make a significant difference?

I am also bringing a 24-105mm for landscape shots.

The 100-500 is definitely the faster, better lens. My fear is that I will be kicking myself for not having that extra reach but part of me wonders if it will make that big a difference ( if the wildlife is that far away, is the 100mm Difference going to really matter?)

( for comparison, I went to Denali with a 100-400– I was still able to get some passable shots of wildlife ( it was a gloomy overcast day and I really didn’t know what I was doing )

How far away was the wildlife? I have never been and really do not have any idea.

Hi again, Judy. Distance to wildlife varies a lot in Yellowstone from uncomfortably close to barely visible, but there’s a lot to choose from. Modern zooms work very well with teleconverters. There’s a woman on this site that routinely uses the 100-500 with the 2.0 TC on birds and she gets great results.
