Lesser Snow Goose

Russian variety. These birds migrate back and forth from what we call Wrangel Island. In round numbers there are about 300,000 of these birds that spend the winter in North America. Most fly south into California. About 100,000 spend the winter around the mouth of the Fraser River and around the Skagit River in northern Washington.
For some reason this bird was alone which is unusual.
The orange color is from digging in the mud to get at cattail roots.

The Snow Goose against the snow is really cool and the rusty head really makes a nice splash of color. You should enter one of these in the current weekly challenge (you can’t enter the same photograph in two categories at the same time, but another frame would be permissible).

Hi David,
Nice details on the bird with a fine pose. Interesting composition with the sticks in the background framing the bird. Well done.

Nicekly done. The head color is a bonus for sure. The goose is well defined from the white BG too. Awesome job…Jim

Nice shot and interesting information - never heard of the species before, so thanks for that. Well exposed and I love the white-on-white with the head getting the attention. Well done, Hans
