Light Sketch

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Or “Writing with LIght”, or “Light Drawing” - the literal definition(s) of “Photography.” This is an image from the 2023 archives on Sonora Pass. I was inspired to post this given the use and feature of “light” by our own @Ben van der Sande.

I’m sure you’ve all been there, done that. What I mean is that you’re up before the sun, scouting or photographing a subject before the sun hits and washes everything out. But then, there are those fleeting moments when the sun first strikes a glace upon the landscape. Such was the case here. I did not necessarily pre-plan this, but I was wondering this meadow near our camp as the sun broke over the horizon.

Specific Feedback

My goal in processing images is to “make the image the best it can be” while at the same time constrained within reasonable believability. I actually did a fair amount of masking, painting (contrast & Saturation), and some minor cloning. In the end, the main tuft of grass left of center was the main focus and I tried to isolate or make it stand out just a tad more than the surrounding grasses - without making in obvious.

I hope I have created a natural look and am most curious on your thoughts on this point.

Of course all comments and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks for taking a look!

Lon, the scene for me stays well within that process. It’s always tricky when it comes to a final presentation. In fact, I’d say we all have images that are never really finalized upon present & future reviews from the past look. However, retaining the “believability” factor is key in the end. With that said, it looks very believable as presented here. Additionally, cloning and other cleanup processes are a no harm no foul item in my book. The elimination of distracting items is part of final presentations in my opinion. Nature is not perfect and does require some help at times… :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Hi Lon,
This is an understated, but beautifully crafted image that exudes this peaceful relaxing vibe. I can see myself sitting down in the grasses and soaking up some sun as I let my worries fade away for a bit. The processing looks spot on for my tastes so I would say that you did “make the image the best it can be”. Great light BTW.

Lon, this is a great look at these grasses, with your processing showing tons of details. The lighting is gorgeous. The collection of bent stems in the lower center adds a good bit of interest.

I love the way this pops to life when viewed large; the sharp detail adds to the wonderful mix of light and shadow, and emphasizes the wonderful flow of lines.

I, too, love that little window when the warm light spills in from the side. I so often see awesome images, but have that nagging question in the back of my mind asking “I wonder how much better this would be if lit from the side?”

I like this image a lot. (Apparently) simple, but full of details and the way light is playing with the grasses is very pleasant. It seems a candid shot of grass, but it is much more… And very relaxing.
