The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.
Description
I was standing at the shore of a very clear glacial lake in Norway playing with my daughter when I saw the sunlight reflecting on the surface of the water in a very interesting and colorful way above the dark stones at the bottom of the lake. I quickly grabbed my camera and tried to capture it. I played around with the exposure in order to freeze the gentle waves and rainbow colors without everything ending up in a big blur. The scene was changing constantly so I had to work very quickly. After a couple of minutes the angle of the sunlight changed so much, that the colorful reflections were gone.
Specific Feedback
I cropped this image quite heavily, since I very much liked the structures and tree-like shape in the upper right corner of the original frame. I was wondering, if this kind of heavy cropping would be okay for NLPA.
Also I very much would appreciate general feedback on the image regarding color work, crop and visual flow.
Is it correct to classify this as an abstract picture or would this fall into an intimate landscape category because it is too obvious what it is?
Technical Details
Camera & Lens: Sony A7 VI with Tamron 28-200mm
Camera Settings: 1/320 sec at f/8, ISO 400, 121mm
Processed in Lr, I did not do much processing on this one so far, a bit of contrast and a vignette
Critique Template
Use of the template is optional, but it can help spark ideas.
It is, but I would discourage you from doing too much of it, as that has penalized some images making it into later stages of the competition for a variety of reasons - mostly judges who felt the fieldcraft aspect was “lazy” in nature. Just something to keep in mind.
I really love the subject matter here, nicely executed!
It seems like some parts of this one are in focus but others are not - always a challenge with these sorts of scenes shot at an angle in the water… it looks like the middle/upper 3rd is most in focus, so I’d concentrate my crops there.
I think this falls more into abstract, depending on the crop of course.
I’m always looking out for these water features, “mosaics”. This is one is so very cool and glad you were able to witness and capture.
Can’t speak to the NLPA entry or contest entry in general, but would agree with Matt that such a heavy crop might really hinder things - like being able to enlarge and print.
The great news is that you have a wider view with seemingly countless crops and options. Personally, a square crop in there somewhere, but no more than say 25% of the original size; and also considering finding that area that contains the best focused area.
I’m really enjoying the cool color and the splattering of prism colors. Thanks for sharing.
thank you @Don_Peters and @Lon_Overacker for your kind comments and feedback. I will definitely play around with this scene a bit more. Luckily I have some more frames of it and I will have a look at what works best in the end. yes, focussing was quite tricky and stacking unfortunately not an option, but I will see which parts of the frame are the sharpest thank you for sharing your thoughts, I really appreciate it.
