Looking through a Canyon, to a Lone Tree on the Ridge

Critique Style Requested: Standard

Description

I enjoy exploring out of the way locations. This image was taken in the Owyhee Wilderness in southeast Oregon, hiking up into the canyons, non two alike. It is an area of stark beauty, volcanic rock formations; amongst canyons and grasslands. I enjoy seeing the solitary tree in a scene and this one caught my eye.

Who says the subject of an image need be large? I like it as it turns the idea of what the subject of an image generally is on its head. Your point of view through the canyon and beyond to the tiny tree that “spotlights” the horizon is most effective. Backlighted scrub vegetation in the foreground is the first leading element that provides visual movement to the tree; the rocky outcrop in center is the next. The sky - even in midday - is also effective in bringing the viewer to zero in on the tree. I only have two minor edits here - one is to spotlight the center rocky outcrop to add more light and interest to the center outcrop, and the other is to add a vignette. The spotlight and vignette in combination also add a bit more depth to the image. Terrific image.

Beautiful image, Gary. Even though the lone tree is at a distance, it really stands out on the ridge. I also like how you’ve captured the sunlight falling a few different aspects of the canyon. I’ve never been to the Owyhee, but I hope to visit it sometime.

Thanks for your comment, John. If you go, just be prepared for rough roads, a 4x4 isn’t a necessity, but it helps.

Like what you have done to the image; thanks for commenting.
