Description

This is the Pinwheel Galaxy, the second acquisition with my new tracker. Conditions were not at all good this night, with an almost-full moon but reasonably clear skies – it was a test run for the tracker, still trying to work out the optimal guide settings – an endeavor guaranteed to test anyone’s patience. A lot of people claim you don’t need light pollution filters if you have enough acquisition time, and this proves it to me, but I certainly hope to image this again on a clear dark night.

Technical Details

I’ll spare you the details but it is 6.7 hours of acquisition – 400 1-minute exposures. The telescope with the APS-C sensor has the FOV of a 640mm telephoto and the final image above is cropped to 10% of the original pixels. All processing in PixInsight.

Well and truly out of my wheelhouse Diane, but I can appreciate the time and effort getting these images. (I am missing your birds though) You have much more patience than me.

I am amazed at the very subtle colours.

The whole process is simply mind-blowing.

Thanks, @Glenys_Passier ! I’m missing my birds, too!! Got utterly swamped with spring housecleaning on 5 acres of invasive weeds, flammable native vegetation and invasive and destructive ground squirrels, not to mention winter damage to drip irrigation systems and fallen tree branches that will interfere with grass mowing before wildfire season. BUT… “my” Bluebirds are guarding and protecting their favorite house and the Orioles should arrive any day. And the nearby Egret rookery will already be busy – hope I can catch a bit of action here and there. And after missing all the early flowers I finally got some Dogwoods yesterday. Oh – and it will be severe clear tomorrow night, but with a lot of moonlight. That used to stop me but no longer. (If my husband gets hungry enough maybe he will start cooking…)

And I almost forgot – after an early spring we now have some “late” frosts with things to protect.

@Diane_Miller ! Sounds like you’ve been busy. Upkeep on our little acreage is also wearing. We have every weed in the “invasive weed” book and more. We’ve had good rain, but now it’s starting to dry off for winter and the rank older grasses need constant mowing down. Luckily a lot of the paddock is now planted out. I wouldn’t mind ground squirrels!

Can’t wait to see your bluebirds and egrets again, not to mention your dogwood.

It doesn’t seem to matter how many adults live in our house, the cooking seems to be “my” job. Maybe I should take that as a compliment?

Maybe…. :upside_down_face:
