Malachite Kingfisher - Botswana

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

These tiny kingfishers are smaller than a tennis ball, but fairly easy to spot with their spectacular colours. This one landed about 10 feet from us and I had to scramble to change lenses.

Specific Feedback

Is the BG too distracting? I felt it added interest and environmental perspective.

Good work, Sandy. The composition is unusual but effective. The bird is intriguing. We don’t have kingfishers around here.

The orange beak and blue feathers look a little oversaturated to me but that’s a matter of taste buds.

Thanks - they are actually that bright!

Excellent, Sandy. The background is probably distracting, but it’s so beautiful I couldn’t bear to do anything with it. Nice job on the kingfisher itself.

Sandy: great job on getting this litle guy in focus. The BG is very different from what most of us would normally process, but i think it is very effective in showcasing the bird.

Gorgeous little bird! It actually LOOKS small, somehow – maybe the way it’s hunched up. It’s an unusual pose, turned around 90 degrees to check you out, with the tail looking like it hadn’t turned as far as the body. But the typical huge head is the center of interest anyway, so never mind the feet and tail. I love the BG behind the bird but would crop off the plant head on the left.

Excellent job at catching this kingfisher. Interesting surroundings but I think it works. I like it especially the color.

Beautiful bird. Well seen and taken. I like the surroundings in this image which add another level of interest IMO. Either this is a tiny kingfisher or those are huge plants. Well done.

Thanks, Allen - VERY tiny - about 6 inches long when stretched out

Welcome back to NPN, Sandy. Beautiful bird, well captured. Love the colors. I like the softness of the background and the needles (?) at the top of the stem does give some size context to the bird.
