Mammoth Runoff

I am especially drawn to the abstract beauty of the Hot Spring build up, and wondering if the stark trees detract or add to the drama and give some balance.

Hi Mary, I really like this image. There’s a nice balance to the overall composition. I think the trees are important to the story and the negative space of the sky would be too much without them. Because the buildup slants down to the left, the trees have the space they need. I also like the small tree in the lower right of center. Finally the colors are spectacular. My only suggestion is that the trees look like they might be a touch over sharpened. In the smaller image they look a bit crispy and the larger one is better, but I’ll bet they could be softened up some.

Great image and wonderful scene, Mary.

The trees add quite a lot IMO. This image is great!

Another vote for the trees! The little one hiding in the LR is the grace note!! And in a place like that you can have it both ways – with trees and purely abstract. Lovely colors and tonalities in the rocks!

Thank you, David. The “oversharpened” look may be because my original was too large for the webpage to accept and so I just quickly resized–probably too small and certainly too much sharpening for the size I chose. If I post it again anywhere I will work from my master file and watch the sharpening. ml

Thank you, Diane. You must be a musician! And I just found out what the “rock” is actually called. I referred to it as run off but the technical term, I just googled, is travertine. I want to remember that and correct my title at some point. I did another image with just the travertine–very abstract.

Thank you Matt.

Another vote for the trees Mary. I love the image. The tension between the stark trees and the soft colorful travertine is very effective.

Mary, this is very nicely balanced, and a wonderful image in my eyes. I especially love the tiny tree nestled between the large main ones. The trees do not distract at all, the image just becomes more about them than the hot springs - but both elements support each other very well here.

My critiques are all minor:

  • You could try cooling the whole scene down to bring a little more blue into the sky to contrast with the land, and to separate some of those varying warm tones in the land. A bit of a saturation increase would also help after the cooling to separate tones and avoid washed-out colors

  • You could also try selectively vignetting some of the lighter edges - namely the top and bottom of the frame, maybe a bit on the right along the land as well.

  • The area of the land right below the trees looks a little dark and dingy, could be slightly brightened.

Otherwise this looks fantastic!

Mary Lane,

Wonderful image from the hot springs area! Love the colors and the natural abstract details of the land. And yes, the trees are a great inclusion; balance the scene nicely and complete a terrific nature story.

I really like Alex’s “minor” edits; especially the little extra color treatment for the sky - and a good thing there’s a little variation in those clouds so the sky just wasn’t plain boring gray.

Most mentioned that lone little tree almost camouflaged in the abstract patterns. IMHO, that’s the story! I hope with the size of your original pixels you can get a decent crop of this. Yeah, we all have our own prefences and so this may not be your vision of the scene, but wow, isolating that desolate little tree in the harsh hot springs enviroment, is another great story, within an already compelling nature story.

Great image, Mary! I really love the yellow abstract looking rock and the trees definitely add some character to the whole scene. Nicely seen!

Alex, I value your input, and I will challenge my editing skills to come close to what you did. Thank you. I was a bit afraid to do too much to the sky or colors because I don’t know how much processing this network allows. ml

Thanks, Lon. I will check my other shots to see if I can get more pixels with that tight a crop.
