Marsh Wren on Top of the World

Version 2

Version 3

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I had a number of semi-to-completely cooperative marsh wrens at Sacramento NWR last week. These three came from the one session where the bird was actually on top of the reeds. I’ll be posting some of the half-hidden ones later.

Specific Feedback

I have my personal favorite of these three poses (this was a most cooperative marsh wren), but I am interested in other people’s opinions, and why they prefer the one they do and if there is anything they would change about it.

Technical Details

All three images were taken within a couple of minutes at the same settings. The main editing was (1) removing a vertical green reed stem to the right of the bird that went from bottom to top of the frame and behind all the other reeds. (2) in image 3, removing the large triangular reed that is on the right in the first two images. (3) in image 2 copying and moving the leftmost triangular reed which was on the left edge of the original frame, but I wanted it a little further in as I had to cut if for this crop.

Hi Dennis, I prefer image #3 as well. The pose seems the most dynamic with the best view of the body of the bird along with great singing pose and tail position. The reeds seem the most complimentary to me. Looks like you removed one from the foreground in front in the third image. Well seen and taken.

Dennis, I’ll vote for #1 because it has more bent/broken reeds (triangles). Love the singing post from the tops of the triangles and the fact that it’s not singing from the highest perch.
