The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

With cold weather and 5 inches of snow hitting SE Michigan, I decided to dive into the reef tank to see what I could capture. Micromussa lordhowensis is a brightly colored large polyp stony coral that can be challenging to photograph. The fleshy polyps move slightly from water currents which creates many artifacts during stacking. I also used a polarizing filter to eliminate any reflections from the aquarium glass. I also did not use any flashes, but relied on my elaborate led reef light to iklkluminate the scene. I had to adjust the white balance to reduce the impact of the blue and cyan LED’s in the lighting array. Of interest is that I was able to pick up some of the light purple color with this lighting.

Specific Feedback

The comp is pretty loose and was thinking about cropping out the dark upper corners. How do you feel about that? Using flash would have reduced the impact of the polyp’s texture and color and would have made selecting an appropriate white balance more difficult. How do you like the lighting?

Wow Jim - beautiful photograph. Before reading your brief and feedback ask, my first instinct when viewing the photograph was to crop it to eliminate the upper black corners. I feel with abstracts you can get away with the crop. Love to see it again if you make this change.

Thank you @stephen_rauch . I uploaded a cropped version without the dark corners…Jim

I like the cropped version, Jim, and the lighting looks fine to me. This looks like a tough image to get. I tried photographing in Seattle’s new aquarium branch where they installed nice modern lighting that I’m sure was better for the critters, but it was a nightmare to process and I never did end up with anything I really liked out of it.

Very nice Jim

Very impressive image, Jim. I like the cropped version the best. This photo would be nice for a puzzle.

Jim: Really beautiful result, especially the cropped version. Excellent clarity despite the challenges of the capture. Most excellent. >=))>

Jim,

Fascinating creature. I do like the cropped version. I think your lighting is good, it accentuates all the polyp detail and creates those shadows the texture throughout. Colors look natural to me.

Jim, you’ve got a fine collection of colors and shapes here. The lighting looks fine. I’m fascinated that the red parts in the upper right look a bit sharper that the magentas, but I’m amazed at the quality since you shot a stack through moving water.

Fascinating and lovely! I’ve never seen anything quite like this and am amazed at the quality you were able to capture through water. Excellent!!
