Morning Bufflehead

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I was down at our local lake looking for bald eagles (didn’t see any) early this morning, and got this swimming away capture of a male bufflehead while I was down there.

Specific Feedback

Is the cropping about right? Pretty square seemed to be the way to go.

Hi Dave, always enjoy seeing images of these birds because I don’t see many in my area. Yes, I agree with your choice of cropping; don’t need to see any more water. I also enjoy the going away view, which is uncommon, and the disturbed water you captured certainly indicates movement, even if we can’t see his webbed feet going:wink:. Overall, a nice photo you have here.

These guys always seem to swim away from me as well, Dave. I like the iridescence you caught on the head and the crop works for me. Whites are always tough on this species, but you might be able to get a little detail in those areas by pulling down the highlights a bit.

The crop/composition is good, Dave. And, I like the slight head turn so we can see the eye and you caught some of the iridescence on the head. Water color and ripples are nice as well.
