A very interesting morning at my local beach…low cloud (fog?) was on the water just beyond a small group of buffleheads. There was no real horizon and the water was glass which was intriguing). One took off and this one was close behind…I have learned they tend to take off in pairs.

Specific Feedback and Self-Critique
This photo is a bit different for me…and I really caught it by accident more than by design. I really like this as it matches my design sensibility (black and white and a touch of a wild colour). This is almost as shot except for a little creative cropping and increasing the whites considerably to try and create an even more minimalist look. I am very interested in if you like this or not and why. E.g. a matter of taste and or technical details.

Hi Robena, I think this is fabulous. The minimalist composition really sets off that great action pose. Terrific leading lines with the line of splashing water combined with the line of reflection on the bird. The surrounding white foreground and background gives a nice stark contrast for the dark areas of the bird to stand out. I would take out the small bright areas just below the bird’s bill. Wonderful frame!
Cool image. I, too, appreciated the leading lines of water and reflection. I like the running pose and water splashes. The high key element works well. The feet do give you a nice splash of color. Was there any color in the head that could be brought out? Or are the feet enough?
I am in no way knowledgeable in the technique or processing of high key images, so I’ll just say I do like this shot. The reflection in the water ripples and the splashes from his feet both speak to the action taking place. And I like the color in his feet. Nicely seen and captured.
Thanks for your response…always appreciated. I didn’t even see the bright areas under the birds bill until I searched for it…will have to work on my monitor.
