Description

While looking for mergansers to photograph, I noticed this quail on sage watching over a covey (an assumption, could hear; not see). The smoke from wildfires gave the scene a soft feeling.

Specific Feedback

While I like the softness, the quail is also a bit soft. I did do some sharpening, but not sure if enough. Raw is not available because I had camera on jpeg.

Technical Details

Canon 7DMKII; 100/400 @ 400; 1/320th; 5.6; spot; 640 ISO; Auto WB; crop to about 75% of original.

I like the softness of the image as well and the overall setting. I’m not sure how important it would be to have the quail sharper as this seems more an image about the quail in its environment. I find this a very pleasing image; thanks for sharing.

Hi Jim, I see what you mean by the softness but this is still a very pleasing image to view. Bird is well placed in the frame and I like the palette of colors. Wish the bird wasn’t looking away from us.

Unusual, but effective with that title, Jim. He does look like (and is) a lookout surveying the terrain for danger to his clan. The smallness of the bird in the frame and it’s pose looking slightly away work i this case because of how you positioned the bird in the frame. Nicely done.

Hi Jim
Thank you for photograph lessen, this work and very pleasing on the eye.

I like the position of the bird overlooking its habitat and the overall soft colours of the image. No problem with the slight softness of the bird.
A small head turn of the bird, to the right, would have been nice… But capturing wildlife is also about being content with what you get.
Very nice image.

Jim: I think that this is a great example of less is more. Having the quail occupy only a small portion of the frame while postioned against the muted background makes the quail stand out even more than if it occupied a larger part of the frame.

Very nice, and typical of a lookout quail. Interesting and humorous that he’s bending down the branch but seems content with the perch. They are good at posting guards. The IQ is OK for the overall soft scene. Raw may not have been a huge advantage here.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I do have two others with a different head turn, but the background is a little different…

these quails are gorgeous, and this is a neat shot. Love the environment, placement in the frame, and pose. Sweet soft colours

Thank you.
