Hi Huw. Are you using manual power on the flash or TTL? If you’ve set the flash to be your primary light source, you could probably get away with stopping down more and shutter speed can drop as long as you don’t get too much ambient light. That said, your current settings did a fine job on this guy. I’m amazed you could get close enough for this without it taking off.
Lighting looks fine to me, with very pleasing diffusion, and nice DOF. I’ve had bad luck with the exposure-determining pre-flash of TTL flash sometimes spooking subjects.
Huw: Anytime the flash is unnoticeable it’s a big plus for me and it’s certainly unobtrusive here. I like the detail in the head and the DOF falloff on the body and wings. Really good work to get this close with a 90mm and a very fine result. >=))>
Flash work looks good to me. The halteres are those bright, lobe -like structures are very bright and unfortunately are over-exposed. It happens with dark subjects. If you can, try adjusting the exposure comp for the flash to -1.3 to 2.0 ev. I would try to get the brightness tweaked down a tad which will enable the viewer to concentrate on the fly’s eyes. Overall, details and focus are good and if you can tame down those brights, it will strengthen the comp. Well done…Jim
Huw, the details in the head and eyes are amazing. The brightest bits in the body and that wing on the left can be burned-in to reduce how much they stand out.
