Northern shrike

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

this was taken at one of the wildlife refuges in Washington state. It’s the first northern shrike I’ve seen. I go out to the wetland areas quite frequently or did so quite frequently when I was able to walk farther than I am able to currently. It’s the only bird of the species I’ve ever seen. For those of you who aren’t aware, the small hawk like creatures impale their prey on the thorny bushes and sticks so they can feed on them later.

Specific Feedback

anything that’ll help me as a photographer, improve my skills..

Technical Details

I think this was shot with the Nikon D 70 or perhaps a D 700. With a 600 mm F4 telephoto.

this was taken without Nikon D 800 E, ISO 200, 600 mm telephoto F4, and that’s all the metadata that I can locate.

Nice look at shrike, David. Good pose-looks as if it’s ready to spring into action. The “V” shape of the perch seems to balance the image. The background gives a sense of the environment, but still lets the bird stand out.

Hi David
Thak you for providing us with this Northern shrike photo. I like the framing, but the Shrike looks a little crispy.

I just found the original raw file on my computer. I’ll see what I can do with it.

Hi David, great to see a shot of this bird. I’d love to have an image of this species but no luck for me so far. Nice pose and background. Agree the bird seems a bit crisp.
