Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This bunch of trees was reticent in changing. Other trees in its neighborhood were on their way to yellow, but these hung on for a bit. I liked how the white branches stood out amongst the leaves.

Specific Feedback

I dodged the darker spots coming in from the background, let me know if I went far enough or if there are other distractions I didn’t see. I went with this kind of pano-ish crop to eliminate a corner that didn’t fit.
I was going for a lighter image. Let me know if there’s enough contrast here.

I think this turned out very nice. That reddish-brown splotch in the LLC does catch my eye, though.

Thank you, @Ronald_Murphy ! I will take a look at that. I can’t remember what plant that is in the corner, but I love them in the fall, I’ll look at taking that one down a notch so it doesn’t distract.
Thank you!

This is intriguing! At first glance I was missing a strong point of interest then I realized the cohesiveness of the whole is the point – so to speak. (I’m only halfway through first cup of coffee so I’m probably babbling.) I see the first hint of autumn in the yellow aspen leaves but somehow this evokes spring for me. (Longing, already?) Rather than subtle, I’d say it is gentle. There is a lovely pointillism to it. The warmer color in the LL corner could be bent toward the lovely yellows across the bottom. Looks like contrast has been dropped down there – maybe try to match the LR corner.

I wonder about a touch more tonal detail in the whites but that could be tricky. Is there a musical analogy there? Delicate high notes sort of thing. Son-in-law Scott’s guitar is still playing in my head from after Thanksgiving dinner. He was riffing on something bluesy (a perfect complement for the very contented cat curled up in her favorite chair) and got into some gorgeous dancing high notes that were just hanging in the air.

Back to the coffee pot – thanks for a lovely start-the-day image!

Julie, this is a good one. I think you might consider lowering the brightness some, maybe to something like this.

I also painted out the oranges because I found them distracting. Just a suggestion.

Hi Julie,
This looks like a wonderful mosaic of green. For my own personal tastes this is a little bright so my thoughts pretty much echo the rework posted by @Don_Peters. I think that just lets those wonderful greens really shine.

I echo @Ed_Lowe’s comment, and the rework by @Don_Peters is the ticket here. I love the ‘pointillist’ look of all the leaves. Your composition works for me.

Thank you, everyone. Ok it seems that I need to look at my edit again.
Let me go back to the raw file and get back to you. I feel like I’m hearing that in terms of composition/intention, it’s ok, it seems like the edit is the issue. So I can work that up.
Thanks!
~Julie

I like the composition, and the color palate is very pleasing. For me, I would prefer it to be darker with a bit more contrast as it feels too washed out. Of course, this is my subjective opinion. As the Romans used to say, De gustibus non est disputandum…
