Not so graceful

I think this is a juvenile Trumpeter Swan.

Wonderful action, Allen. I love the open bill. The bird seems a bit soft, but I’m not sure if its motion or focus. I would think 1/1000 would be enough, but this large a bird would have been a long ways away and a bit of camera shake could produce some blur pretty easily.

Thanks for commenting, Dennis. Yes, the bird was a long ways off and this is heavily cropped. That said, I don’t know if it’s me (probably) or my equipment, but I have difficulty getting good focus.

I find it very difficult on long shots. Also, camera shake becomes very important when you’re further away. Just think about how little movement at the camera end it’s going to take blur together two feather barbs at 100 feet. I haven’t bothered to do the math, but it’s an extremely small arc.

I love the pose with the open beak and the splashing water is nice. Softness of the bird is an issue but the action is great.
