Description
Fur Seal Colony, Kaikoura, near Christchurch, South Island, NZ
There are three types of pinnipeds – walruses, true seals and seals. New Zealand fur seals are classed as ‘seals’ and not ‘true seals’, because they have external ear flaps like sea lions as well as other characteristics unique to the ‘seal’ family.
Once hunted extremely close to extinction for fur and meat, the fur seal population is recovering with the last estimate of 200,000 .
The Māori name for the New Zealand fur seal is “kekeno”.

It’s hard to get nice images of seals, but you’ve nailed a good one here. It’s lovely to see the pup nursing.
Just outside Kaikoura there is the most astonishing site. Baby seals are left in a freshwater creche complete with a waterfall for them to play in while the mothers go out to fish. The seals negotiate the road by travelling through a calvert. I hope you got yo see this.
@glennie, Yes, we sure did! Got lots of images from a perfect vantage point! They reminded me of kids playing in a hot tub. I’m sure the water is warmer, in the enclosed pools. The pups are SO endearing!
More images coming…
Sandy: nicely seen and captured. The nursing pup and mother both are diagonals and add to the composition. It’s hard to believe that both would be comfortable on a pile of sharp edged rocks, but that’s what a layer of blubber will do for you.
