Oregon Sunshine

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

In spring and early summer, the walls of the Columbia River Gorge come alive with flowering plants. My favorite are the Stonecrop, but all of them are fun to play around with. It’s a fun game to try to find both a plant and an intriguing bit of rock to frame them with. Prowling the internet, this may be Oregon Sunshine (Eriophyllum lanatum)??

Specific Feedback

I find yellow composites to be harder to photograph than the other flowers that bloom on the gorge walls. (Maybe because they are such a common type of flower?) Does the rock wall provide an acceptable framing for this one? I’ve tried to keep the shadows dark to allow the plant that was caught in sunlight to stand out. Is that contrast too much?

As always, any thought are always helpful and welcome.

John: Oh this is fine! Terrific spotlighting and the play of light and shadow is excellent. A wonderful find and an equally fine capture and presentation. :+1: :+1:>=))>

This is fabulous, John! The light is perfect, and the processing is right on the money. There are no nits to pick.

Nicely done!

All said above! A wonderful job of presenting this unique bouquet. The lighting on the plant and the rocks feels perfectly balanced to me.

Beautiful image, John, with the flowers contrasting so well with the basalt. As others have mentioned, the lighting is excellent. I don’t know if a closer approach was possible, but a tighter shot of the upper parts of the flower cluster and some surrounding rock would also make a fine composition.

And yes, it is Oregon Sunshine, one of my favorite prairie plants, though it can take over a flower bed.

I keep coming back to this one, it really works. I love the light on the rock edge leading up to the bouquet. Colors, tone, processing are all working. You could even crop from the upper right corner and just leave the leading line and the bouquet and it works, too. But it’s just another option to this already excellent image that I can’t help looking at.
