Questions for Viewers

I don’t want to say too much about this photograph before getting your impressions because I don’t want to impose my interpretation of this image on the reader but rather let each one who is viewing it come to their own sense of it. But this I will say - it is not a tourist attraction on a list of things to see in Newfoundland. Rather, it represents one of thousands of “rock piles” to be found up and down the coasts of the island. Not for nothing is Newfoundland known as “The Rock”. What I would like to get is your impressions or feelings on viewing this image. What mood or story does it evoke for you?

About This Image

My wife and pulled over off the highway late in the day to stretch our legs. As we walked over a slight rise that visually separated the highway from the ocean we were blown away by the ruggedness along this vast stretch of boulder strewn coast. Awestruck, we couldn’t pull ourselves away and ended up hanging out there until it got too dark to safely roam around on those boulders. This particular formation, lit as it was by the low light of the setting sun, struck me as a monumental and timeless ruin and the title I’ve given this photograph is meant to reflect that.

Technical Details

You may wonder at the EXIF data - why shoot at 1600 ISO and 1/400 sec. The reason is that there were a lot of gulls and ravens cruising around and I wanted to get some images that included low flying birds. This obviously isn’t one of those but there were a number of others taken from different perspectives that do include birds and worked out pretty well . Maybe I’ll post one or two of them at another time.
