Painting the tuff hills

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The gentle tuff hills near Siena, Tuscany, have particular colors and many undulations. At the end of the summer they seem to have a more painterly appearance, at least to me. There was a light haze in the background.

Specific Feedback

Did I manage to represent the pictorial aspect?

Nice composition. However, I thought a slight crop would position the buildings better in the composition. A little more imformation on your post processing would be helpful. I was trying to determine if you use a “painterly” tool in your editing. I have played around with them a bit myself.

No Gary for a painterly look I don’t use any tool, for such photos my simple rules are: a lot of light, very low contrast, low saturation. For improving the lights I use in PS Shadows/Highlights and for the colors, gray and white I use Selective color because both these commands usually lower the contrast.
Thanks for your comment and the advise.

Gigi, this is beautiful - definitely a very painterly look that is perfect for this scene. The muted, soft colours and interesting buildings, along with the flowing hills and paths make a very compelling image.
I think Gary’s crop does balance the image a bit more, but your original is still excellent. Perhaps halfway between…
Amazing work!

While Gary’s revision does balance it a bit more, I prefer the original. I like to see more of what a traveler passes through on the way to the buildings. Beautiful image. Well done.

This is a wonderful, yes, painterly image Giuseppe. I like your original image best, I think because of the curves and hills and the roadway. I would like to see the very top of that round hill on the upper right side though. What a beautiful place to be and to live.

Hi @Giuseppe_Guadagno, What a lovely image of Tuscany you have shared with us. I love the sensuous curves of the road echoed into the fields and the delicious colors. The positions of the villas work just fine. Really well seen and processed.

Guiseppe, this has a very painterly look. I like how the main interest angles across the frame. Much of the painting feeling comes from the limited resolution and the low contrast, that your processing has created.

A painterly image indeed, Guiseppe. Wonderful soft tones. I like your original image as well as the crop proposed by @gDan52 .
I agree with @Ed_Williams about the top of the hill on the upper right side. But maybe you cut off another hill in the distance then, as there are probably many more undulations.

Thanks @gDan52, @SandyR-B, @Jim_Gavin, @Ed_Williams, @guy and @Mark_Seaver for your grateful comments and for the answers to my question.
Following the advise of @gDan52 with the suggested compromise of @SandyR-B I will try a crop of one finger in the bottom. I’m sorry @Ed_Williams the top of the hill is not in the original photo but you are right.
