"Pateira de Fermentelos #2"

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is just a note.
This is the first “keeper” - or should I say the first edit? - with my new photo kit.
I did change from a very respectable and appreciated D810 (just love the camera), to a new approach to photography; the Nikon Z7ii. First impressions are very, very positive.

Welcome back to the “fold”, Joao. A nice little wintertime scene. Captures the “feel” of this part of the year. I don’t have any suggestions. Glad you like your new gear.

Joao,

I like the details that are evident in the trees, even at that distance. Not a highly dynamic range photo, but the camera has handled the highlights and shadows excellently. Is the water in the FG moving, or is it ice? One question, why does the reflection appear to be tilted? I can’t seem to wrap my head around why that is. Looking forward to more work with your new gear.

Darn, I’m not very observant. :rofl:I didn’t even notice that.

Joáo, You’ve captured a fine feeling here. I’m very much drawn to the mix of quiet and slightly melancholy. I suspect that the tilted reflections are because you “leveled” the horizon (the far bank) when it was actually angling away from you (rather than perpendicular to the camera). (The rules for translating 3D perspective into a 2D image say that something level but not perpendicular to the viewer needs to be tilted.) I like the subtle softness of the foreground water.

Hi Joao,
Nice to see a post from you again and congrats on the new camera system. Even though I loved my D800 I got rid of it a few years back and purchased the Nikon Z7 just to save some weight. I think you will very much enjoy the Z7ii. I am very much enjoying the peaceful vibe of this scene along with those wonderful warm and cool tones in the sky. I also quite like those reflections in the water. While I enjoy this very much as is I think you have a twofer here with a vertical. I hope you do not mind, but here is what I was thinking. Not a critique, just another option. I hope to see some more images from your new system.

Thank you all for the comments.
@Youssef_Ismail and @Mark_Seaver You are both probably right, as I confess that I made a simple correction and didn’t check it very thoroughly.
As I already said, this photo is just a record.
@Ed_Lowe It is always a pleasure to receive criticism and suggestions, even when I don’t agree with them…
I understand your point of view, but in this case I think that expanding the scene requires a horizontal format. And I like the sky…

Great to have you back, Joao. I’ve missed your comments and especially your photos. You posted some terrific images in your 10 favorites for the year. I wish you had posted those for us to see during the year.
Anyway, This is a beautiful minimalist scene that is calming and subtle. Even the golden light over the tree tops speaks softly to me. The clouds are not menacing but rather moody in a gentle forgiving way. I know this is your first edit with your new kit and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Everything looks and feels very natural. I think you’re going to love that kit and that little 24-120mm lens is a real champ. So versatile. That and a 100-400 lens and you have a great kit. Add the 14-30 if you want to do some wide angle shots with almost no weight.
Keep them coming Joao!
