I captured this scene during short visit Peggy’s Cove on a very rainy July late morning. I was drawn to the red house and the contrast with the evergreen tree and golden seaweed. My processing feels okay but somewhat uninspired to my eyes. I’m curious to see how others might bring it more to life.

I’m glad you’ll take a look at this, Ariel! RE: reaction and feeling, I think first how I was feeling… a bit cranky and wondering how this teeny tiny village feels about busloads of tourists descending on them regularly to walk around and take pictures! To contrast that, this serene, isolated little scene with its colors muted by the fog drew my eye. So to shift this to the feeling I want to convey: contented solitude. Thanks for asking, and I look forward to seeing where your imagination takes you!
Hi Beth, I tried playing around with your image, but really the only difference I made from your fine post is that I desaturated and darkened the neon greens in the lower half…they seem to pull my eye away from that cool structure.
Cool, calm and a sense of isolation. Love the small structure in the distant fog. If I hadn’t been there (a long time ago), I would have thought this to be very isolated with few indications of human involvement. Maybe a bit of desaturation where @David_Bostock suggests, but not a lot. Well presented.
Based on your thoughts and feelings, here is a Screenshot of a few editing renditions. Now I am just playing. This was fun to try different approaches. Thanks,
I actually like the BNW one for the “a bit cranky” feeling.
1 and 3 are more of the same hazy feel. One has more texture and image three has the opposite, a more diffused look. I was shooting for a painterly in LR alone. I don’t think I achieved it 100%, I would probably bring it in PS or Topaz to add some subtle Painterly effects if I wanted to go there.
Images 2 and 4 are more my observing liking, and they feel more isolated to me. I love the fog, but as you know, it is my nemesis. But in this case, I wanted to see more of the land behind the boat house. For me, it added to the isolation. If you want any LR info, let me know. I will add Screenshots of the sliders if you want any. I did desaturate the lower left corner, too, with a linear filter. When I did the global effects, it got very intense yellow and green and, as David said, started to draw me away.
Ariel, a very belated thank you for your variations on this image! (I don’t recall getting emails about updates on this thread, I’ll have to check my settings.) I like your description of “cranky” for the b/w, as I wonder if that’s how the residents feels sometimes when busload after busload deposits tourists to climb all over things Anyway! The first image is most true to the scene; it takes me right back there. I think that’s my favorite, with the third one also drawing me in. I appreciate the fog adding some isolation. I really appreciate that you took some time with this image to see where it could go!
Thank you so much, Gavin! And oof, I’m embarrassed to admit I didn’t notice that structure on the land behind the house… I was so connected to the foreground. Your comment gives me a great reminder to slow down and see what else I might not have noticed in the moment.
