Pewits Nest

I tried multiple speeds to try and get the water right but I am not sure about the outcome.

This looks real nice to me. I like the shutter speed. I might clone out the curved branch top left and see how it looks in comparison, but no other suggestions. Looks good.

hi @John_Moses,
nice shot, i like this scene a lot! the exposure speed for the water looks good to me. it would be interesting to see a slightly longer exposure as a comparison though. do you have any that you would like to share? i also was wondering whether you have a little more room on the bottom (for the water and also for that little fern in the corner)?
not sure what you did to the file before uploading here, but it looks like a lot of fine detail got lost somewhere along the way.
cheers,
joerg

John, I agree with @Harley_Goldman about the curved branch there but I really like this composition a lot. The FG becomes more like a supporting element of the cascading drops along the stream. I am with @Joerg_Bonner about the file quality. I have seen this on another occasion on the Avian Critique section but not quite sure what’s really going on.

John,

A most beautiful scene, wonderfully captured and the processing (color, etc.) is fantastic (although noted the large view something is a miss; like a small jpg was enlarged beyond it’s pixel capabilities…)

But back to the image. I think the shutter speed is perfect. Hard to tell what detail/texture there is in the second tier/cascade above the pool. It would be a minor thing anyway. I think any faster shutter speed would render the water at the bottom a little choppy. Too much slower, then the water just turns in to white blobs and streaks. So you made a good choice here.

Love the greens in the canyon and also that the stream leads deep in to the image. A great image. Just need to figure out why the large view went wonky…

I like your chosen shutter speed as I tend to like silkier looking waterfalls.

Love the soft light and peaceful mood of the image. I can imagine myself standing there among all that lush green, listening to the gurgling water.

I’d like to see a larger version of this to enjoy more of the details.

The only distraction for me (and it’s very slight) is that opening in the tree canopy about halfway between the upper cascade and the top edge of the frame. The light spot there seems to draw my eyes up and away from the cascades below. Otherwise, I do like your composition.

John, I love the color and contrast you have here, it looks very lush. I agree with @AngelaClassen I find the white sky at the top to be distracting, asis the branch in the upper left corner. To me the interesting stuff in this image is all in the bottom 80% of this scene and i would crop away from the top and or clone away the branch in the ULC.

Thanks to all for the great comments. I still am trying to figure out what happened to the image when I sized it for the web. I did clone out the branch which was a big improvement and am still playing with the cropping.

I too would like to see a version with a longer shutter speed. In fact, a blend of a longer shutter speed for the flatter parts of the stream and this one for the falls might look good?
