Pitcher Plants

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Two of my favorite things - Pitcher plants and backlighting. My friend paddled off into a backwater and then yelled over to me that she found something wonderful. I’ve known her for well over 40 years so knew it would be something magical and it was - a mini-ecosystem on a partially submerged log. It was covered in gorgeous Pitcher Plants that I had seen blooming in this location in June, but now the flowers were withered. For just a few minutes, the earth was in this position and if it hadn’t taken me so long to maneuver the kayak, I’d have gotten something better, but that’s how it is in a kayak a lot of the time. Still I’m pretty happy with this even though it is quite a busy little scene.

Specific Feedback

Ok, it’s weird, but does it have any appeal for folks other than me and my crazy friend? Thoughts on processing welcome.

Technical Details

Handheld in the kayak, probably a CPL on given the lens.

image

Processed pretty heavily in both Lr and Ps. Lr for the crop and global and masking adjustments to manage that huge dynamic range. Also had to work hard to get the color right so that it wasn’t too magenta. Cropping and distraction removal in Ps.

Love how the light shines through the pitcher plants reveals the intricate veins. Also the complimentary feel of the foliage and the pitcher foliage. Nice maneuvering and great shot, Kris.
