Young Carnivorous Pitcher Plant

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

You find amazing things when slogging through swamps. This little guy will be eating meat in a few weeks.

Specific Feedback

This black light pup does look this soft in life as it is about an 1/8 of an inch thick.
Any ideas on how to handle the visual softness?

Hi Steve: I downloaded your image. By visual softness, I think you’re talking about the bit of halo around the edges of the upper part of the plant. I just opened the file in PS, did a select subject, select inverse, and then used the clone tool to clone from the background over the fuzzy part. You have to be careful and change your clone source fairly often, but it only took a minute or two for this version.

So warm and glowing. It looks like a nightlight. How did you get it backlit? Nice definition in the veins of the plants. I see what you mean about the softness around it and Dennis came up with a good solution. What if you darkened the horizontal stick at the bottom where it overlaps the plant? It seems a little bright to my eye.

Thanks @Dennis_Plank and @Chris_Baird
Dennis looks much better. Thanks for taking the time to show me.
Chris backlighting was natural - early morning light strong enough to light the twig through the plant.

These are such neat plants - congratulations on finding one of the leaves out in the open. I’ve had similar backlighting with a Skunk cabbage flower, but this is a bit more like part of the animal kingdom rather than plant - the veins are what does it. Neat find!
