Priarie Chicken in Flight

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I visited a prairie chicken lek three mornings in a row. On mornings one and two, the birds all left at the same time, but on the third morning one bird lingered for a while. The flock mates all flew directly at and then over the blind and I assumed this one would do the same. Accordingly, I switched from a 600 mm lens to a hand holdable 100-500. I was able to track the bird for a few frames as it gained height and got these frames. The images were cropped.

Technical Details

Canon EOS R5 and 100-500 lens at 1/8000, f/9 and Auto ISO.

Fantastic captures with wonderful sharpness and detail! Excellent you anticipated and were prepared.

Both images are excellent, Richard. I do prefer the first because you have just a bit more eye in it, including the catchlight and that adds a real feeling of connection with the bird.

Very fine in flight captures Richard. Both are very nice poses with the bird and head angled towards us. Good call on going to hand held zoom. Well done.

Diane, Dennis and Allen; thank you for your comments which are appreciated. Richard

Hi Richard
Thank you for these photographs, I will probably never get out to the see Prairie Chicken in the wild. I prefer the first shot, because this background adds more to the photograph.

Beautiful images, both of them although I do prefer the first image. The warm and cool colors of the ground and the sky provide a terrific background as apposed to just sky in the second frame. I love the head turn, the wing position and the feather detail on the back of the bird and it’s wings. Great capture. Wish I was there with you. What an opportunity.

Peter and David: thank you for taking the time to look and comment. Your comments are appreciated. I prefer the first as well given its background. Thanks again, Richard
