R5 Bald Eagle

From Friday and my first day out with Canon R5. I will post a few comments in the thread that Diane started in Discussions.

Normally I would have cleaned up some of the branches but I noticed the grey halo in lower right of photo. Because of cropping this represents about half of the halo in original file. The halo occurs in several photos from this particular set of shots. I have other shots of this eagle and an immature eagle just a bit higher in the tree with no halo.
Any comments on the halo would be welcome. I am wondering if my technique is causing it. I use a Gitzo tripod and Wimberly Gimbal head. I pull the camera in tight to my eye and use my left and to press down a bit on the lens to further tighten things up. I have a lens, then an extender and then an adapter attached to the camera. Perhaps with all the connections and my “pulling” down causes the shadow. I will need to test it out a bit more.

R5, 700mm, Av mode, f/8, 1/5000, ISO 1600. Cropped to 46% of full vertical. I was using an expanded focus point which seemed to work all right with perhaps a bit more focus on the darker feathers than head. I would have done a bit more NR in PS but left as is from LR to leave the shadow ring as is.

Detail in the Eagle looks very good at web scale, David. I do see the gray area, but have no idea what might cause it. Could you post the entire image with the contrast jacked up a bit to make it more obvious? That might help with guesses as to the cause. Also, specifics on the lens, TC and adapter might be helpful.

Hi Dennis. I tried adding the image to this thread but had issues so I created a new post. Adding contrast and a a few other settings is revealing!

Wonderful shot with great detail and sharpness and an interesting pose. I’ve commented on the OOF areas in the other post. They could be a bit of a challenge to clean up, but it could probably be done, along with a few of the branches on the perch.

Comments of grey banding would be appreciated. I ahve more fully described the issue in a post of the eagle.

This one of the first images taken with a new Canon R5 camera. I used a Canon 500mm VII lens, Canon 1.4 VIII teleconverter and a Canon EF to RF adapter.

I bumped contrast and increased shadows and blacks. It is interesting how a few other shadowy details emerge.

The gray rainbow shape and a few others near it look like an OOF branch between you and the bird. Or else it’s a piece of lint somewhere in your optical train, maybe even on the sensor. Do they occur if you shoot an empty sky and bring up the contrast?

Very interesting, David. When I first looked at the arc, I thought it looked like something in the optics, but I’m suspecting that it’s an extremely out of focus branch which would fit with the rest of the dark areas that aren’t so curved. However, you might want to take a bunch of test shots in other conditions to make sure it’s not an equipment issue.

Boy that would be great if it is oof branches. I will take some test shots with the same set up see what things look like. I have a few chores first but will comment on results.

And thanks for the feed back.

Nice pose and detail. Might clone out the branch on the right.

I think @Diane_Miller and @Dennis_Plank are correct. When I first set up to photograph the higher on the tree immature eagle I was not worried about the tall grass in front of me. I then lowered my angle and took some photos of the mature eagle. I then moved locations a bit and took a few more of the mature eagle. Non of the immature nor the second batch of the mature eagle have the grey shadow. It is raining now but in a day or two I should be able to get back out.

You settled it. It was OOF branches or weeds from that one viewpoint.

I think the enlarged image turned out really well. You have excellent detail and your exposure on both the dark and light plumage is perfect.
