I really appreciate your composition and how you have managed to contain the branch, reeds and pebbles in the foreground/midground within the reflection of the trees, as well as using the shape of the non reflected trees to almost cradle the sky. I could spend quite a while admiring this image, especially how you have managed to balance so many components within your scene without making the image feel chaotic at all. Your image creates a strong sense of the location where it was taken, from the moody weather to the lush forest on the banks of the lake.
The only thing I can think to suggest changing is to experiment with cropping out some of the grass at the bottom of the image.
Thank you Keenan for your kind words! It is a tiny unnamed pond nestled into the forest on the second highest mountain in MA. It is quite a special place.
There are mountains in Massachusetts?? LOL. Sorry, couldn’t help it. Being from NH now living in Wisconsin, I understand about having such small peaks compared to elsewhere in the country. For a real laugh, check out Rib “Mountain” in Wausau - the second highest peak in the state - 1940 feet. It’s a hill. Really.
Anyway, this is a cool place for sure. I want to put a kayak in there and explore that ragged shoreline. Such a clear reflection, too. Clouds look sort of ominous and I like the U of the treeline. Not sure about the foreground since it takes a lot of my attention away from that U. Mostly it’s the branch pointing right that is the issue. You could crop above that and see how you like it. Very interesting photo of what looks like a heavenly place.
I am very drawn to this image. The almost fish-eye composition really works here. I don’t find that the reflection competes but rather that it leads my eye towards the shore. I like that you have kept the amount of sky in the frame to a minimum. But what I find most alluring about this picture is the mood - very still and somber - aided by the exposure and your subdued colour palette. My only nit is that the image feels as though it is listing slightly to the left, which I find ever so slightly distracting. Very nicely seen and executed.
Hi Kerry, Thanks for your kind comments! I agree it isn’t quite level, I’m normally careful about that. I had just packed up and was heading out due to an extremely close crack of thunder, but set up again quickly when the wind dropped and the surface stilled. Seems I missed a step, thanks for your gentle reminder!
Like Kerry, I love the mood of this. The dim light, dark shadows, and ragged gray clouds convey a melancholy air. I could see cropping a bit off the bottom, perhaps as Kris said, just above that right-pointing log. It’s lovely no matter what, though.
Wonderful composition in how the eye can follow the arc all around the frame. It reminds me of a similar photo I made way back in 2002 at Dog Lake in the Yosemite.
