Foggy morning

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I don’t get foggy conditions very often where I live, so when I awoke to this condition, I grab my camera and went out to this location not far from my home. I typically don’t like to include man-made objects in my images, but I will take what I get. The fog was very dense when I arrived at this location, but within a few minutes of my arrival it started to rain. Consequently, the fog didn’t last very long.

Specific Feedback

I cropped the FG pond quite a bit and probably could crop off some more of the pond in the FG. Any suggestions on the composition and the crop?

Technical Details

Camera settings: 51mm, f/11, 1.6 secs, ISO 64. Post processed in LR and PS.

Nice image @steven8, it really captures that misty ambience! Sounds like my morning today!

The light and colour palette set an evocative mood but I agree that the water is taking up more than half the frame and isn’t very interesting. I did a pretty radical 16:9 crop , which I think works in that, even though a lot is cut out from either side, the mood is retained. You can see for yourself whether you think it is an improvement or not.

Steven,

I know what you mean, give me fog and it will make a great photo. I love your composition. That bridge carries a lot of symbolism.

Hi Steven,
You certainly captured some wonderful moody atmospherics with this image. The trees and their reflections on the right are quite lovely and the twisted limbs of the one on the left are amazing and laden with character. The small footbridge is essential to the image and the pano crop looks perfect IMO. Did you happen to capture any images of just that tree on the left as it would be a great subject by itself? Beautifully done!

@guy, thank you for the compliment, @Kerry_Gordon, thank you for the suggested crop, @Youssef_Ismail, thanks for compliment, @Ed_Lowe, thank you for the compliment. I appreciate everyone’s input.

Stellar mood you captured Steven, it really speaks to the onset of winter. That’s perfect lighting to lead the eye deep in the image, and I love that you have just a trace of detail even in the distant fog.

I’m partial to @Kerry_Gordon’s crop; while I love that lrc, the llc steals a bit from the rest of the show.

@John_Williams, Thank you for the compliment.

Superb capture Steven. The mood you have captured here is quite spectacular actually. I’m afraid I’m in disagreement with Kerry & John over the crop but, as always, art is subjective. I can’t post a version now but will try to post my idea of a crop later. What draws me to this so much are those wonderful silver/gray barren branches on the left and how that silver/gray is continued on the right most handrail of the bridge. That provides a beautiful balance overall, IMHO. I also LOVE the darker colors and the textures within the water. I believe the 1.6 sec shutter speed worked out nicely there. I’m a member of a co-op gallery in Pensacola and today is my monthly work day, and I just used this image as an example to someone who wasn’t sure photography should be considered art. I made it big on the screen and called her over and asked for her opinion of your image. She loved it, went on and on about how beautiful it was, etc. and then I mentioned to her it was a photograph and she went away, I hope, with a different perspective. This is ART all day long, regardless of what anybody might say. The only issue I have with it is that I wasn’t the one shooting it! It’s called envy!
