Red Headed Cardinal Series

Singing the Song

Grounded and Rooted

Stumped

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This red headed cardinal, another invasive species to Hawaii was taking a drink and looking for insects in the roots of this big tree. It stayed around and another one even came while I was taking pictures to get in on the action. These are beautiful birds, and there are lots of them around.

Specific Feedback

I’m pretty sure the bluish lines on the tops of the roots are reflecting the color of the sky after the rain made the tree stumps wet. You can see the pools of water in the holes of the roots. I’m not sure if I should just leave it alone, or if I should try to reduce the blues, or warm up the overall images. Thanks for taking a look and for any comments you wish to make.

Ed,

I like the blue lines on the wood that the Cardinal is standing on. However, I like the last photo in the series best.

I think the third image is my favorite because of the pose and the head turn and the perch. Nice detail. Yeah these birds are all over Hawaii and they are not Indigenous. And I don’t know where they originate. This is true of quite a few birds on the islands… he only native species in Hawaii is on the big island in the Hakalau refuge. if you go to the big island, look up Jack Jerffries. He may post something on a local newspaper or other media. He’s very knowledgeable and You won’t be disappointed. You could look at my site on Npn and find images of the indigenous birds in one of my folders.

Ed, this is a great series. Every image has it’s merits, and all have interesting perches, nice poses, great colours and detail
I think #1 and #3 are my favorites.
Well-done!

A really nice series, Ed. I love your choice of captions. All the images look good, though the red might be just a tiny bit oversaturated. However, you can take that with a grain of salt since it’s been some time since I’ve been there. The blues reflecting from wet surfaces don’t bother me a bit.

I really like this series Ed. What a beautiful bird. Fine details. I think #1 with the fine singing pose is my favorite. The blue showing the water line looks good to me.

Glad to see your enjoyed these very attractive cardinals over there too, as I recently did on Kauai. My personal fav is the first one. Nifty pose, and I was not going to even notice the blue till it got brought up. I seem to recall reading that these birds are from South America. I kinda wish some could imported to California… Well done! I’m hoping that you’ll shoot and post some more Hawaiian birds.

All nice, Ed. Hard to pick a favorite. The red really pops and the whites look well handled. You caught some good poses and the setting and compositions are all pleasing. My book on Hawaiian birds says there were introduced from South America in 1928.

Thank you so much everyone for your encouraging thoughts. I will see if I can tone down the saturation on the reds a little.
