Rework: less crunchy head

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Third time’s the charm with this immature wood duck at the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden in Portland, OR. I think this is the best shot I got of him.

Specific Feedback

Pretty happy with this one, and there’s much less distraction happening - any suggestions appreciated.

I agree, Debbie: best of the three. You captured all the beautiful qualities of the Wood Duck in this shot and the water splash is a nice bonus.

@allen Thank you! I was happy to find this one as I was going through way too many images…

Hi Debbie, nice to see another Portlander here. I haven’t been to Crystal this fall, looks like I should check it out. FYI, over on the west side, Dawson Creek business park has more Wood Ducks than I’ve ever seen there. It’s right next to the Hillsboro Library.

As for the image, it’s quite nice. It is the best of the three and with your shutter speed got some nice freezing action. Well done. DXO cleaned up the noise quite nicely too. Well done.

Very nice, Debbie. I really like the feather detail in the body. I haven’t seen one in this stage of development, but the head and water splash look just a bit over processed to my eye-a bit crunchy. Still a fine image. I’ve only been to Crystal Springs once, but it was a great experience. I think it was the third level down to the left of the main entrance where there was room to lie on the ground and get down at water level with the ducks {it was just after crossing a fairly long bridge). It made for some beautiful images.

Nice catch Debbie. Love seeing the splash as the duck moves along. The colors and processing on the primary feathers look good to me. The head and neck look a little crunchy IMO as Dennis states above. A fine image.

Thanks @David_Bostock but I was just visiting Portland for a work conference, sneaking out for some birding and photography. That garden had a lot of ducks for the in-between kind of timing. Thank you for the comments!

@Dennis_Plank @Allen_Sparks thank you - I love this image so much but am going to rework it to try to tone down the crunchiness in the head. I was standing on the viewing platform that expands off the boardwalk, no way to get down to the water from there (and I was dressed for a conference, so wouldn’t have done that anyway)…

I reposted this with a hopefully less crunchy head. Sorry for the delay.

Debbie - this is a really nice shot of this duck. Bright colours, great pose, bright eye, flying water, and even a bit of reflection. Your re-post is just great.
