Rievaulx Abbey, Yorkshire

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

When my wife and I approached Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire for the first time, we were deeply impressed by the sense of mystery conveyed to us. A light mist seemed to draw a kind of veil over the scene. We stayed there for a long while, absorbed in the symbols of transience and steadfastness at the same time.

The mist and pastel tones of the structures do give this a rather mystic feel, Peter. I really like the angle you chose to shoot these ruins-it works very well. Even the time of year worked for you as I think the trees and shrubs in the upper right wouldn’t work as well if they were leafed out and green. An excellent image.

This is fantastic, Peter. I love the central arch, with the off-kilter blocks and stones behind it. That, combined with the gauzy feeling, painterly effect, and the bits of nature here and there make this feel very mystical and palpably ancient.

Dennis’ and Marylynne’s comments are exactly how I feel about this wonderful image.
