Ring-necked Duck Diving Sequence

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

The ducks I photographed most besides Wood Ducks last Friday were a trio of Ring-necked Ducks. This is a bit beyond the normal series as it took 9 frames to record this diving sequence.

Specific Feedback

I’m mainly interested in figuring out a processing technique that’s simpler than the one I used. It looks as if you should be able to crop to a specific size (x pixels by y pixels) in PS, but it always ends up acting just as a ratio when I try it. To keep the ducks at the same scale as the series progresses, I need to be able to do that. I developed a work-around, but it was pretty Klutzy.

Technical Details

Sony A1 FE 200-600 + 1.4 TC @ 840 mm, f/9, 1/2000, iso 4000. All images preprocessed in DxO PureRaw 5, further processing in LR & PS CC. All images cropped to 6663x4442 (within a few pixels).

Nice sequence, Dennis. I usually end up with just the last shot by time I get my camera on a diving bird. Good detail and you have the “ring-neck” showing.

Oh WOW, this is really a neat sequence here, Dennis. It’s truly a mini “project” if you will. I can’t say I fully understand your cropping issues per se, all looks fine to me as you’ve presented it. Wonderful spacing on the sequences in not too little and not too much of a gap in the takes…excellent… :star_struck:

Wow, this is a terrific series - I can attest to it happening so quickly that I never really get it, so bravo and hat’s off to you. The colors look the same across all of the shots, as does the amount of light and dark in the feathers (tricky). The crop thing is a bit of a mystery. I would do the final cropping in Lr as I think it handles that better, but I haven’t really tried it on much more than hummingbird photos and it’s been a while.

Nice series Dennis showing this behavior. Pleasing water color that sets off the duck nicely. I don’t think I can help with the cropping issue. Your end result here is a pleasure to view.

Pretty neat sequence, Dennis. I agree that modern technology is allowed us to shoot so many frames per second that we were able to get this kind of action. And these ducks are pretty quick. This is a good lesson in behavior and environment.
