Ring-necked Duck

I rarely see the neck ring, so I like this shot for that reason. I’ve heard some say it should be renamed Ring-billed Duck.

This shot clearly shows the ring neck which does not always show… so nice that you caught that. You are right about the bill and how I identify them at a distance compared to Scaups.

It is not often you see them with a fully extended neck. It can be quite hard to get as good a look at the ring neck as you have here. Good one.

A very nice catch, Allen. This should go in a field guide-along with the image that shows the normal look! I took one of this species the last time I was at a refuge and I could just barely make out the ring-but only because I knew it was supposed to be there. So many of these names are legacies of the era when you shot them to ID them.

Hi Allen, I don’t think I’ve every seen the neck so well shown. Nice catch.

Hi Allen
Every time I come to Nature Photographers, I learn something new. Nice looking Ring-necked Duck. I love the reflection.
