Rock n’ Rust

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I recently went back to Wales (UK) to explore more after my trip with family a few weeks ago. Surrounded by amazing natural beauty I of course gravitated to a rusted piece of metal with a rock in it.

Specific Feedback

This is a little different for me, I haven’t taken many of this style of photo and I’m interested in your reaction to it.

Dom,

Excellent! I love the texture and rusty colors. Maybe I should say earthy colors because honestly rock or petrified wood was my first impression, not metal. For sure, the metals tells a great nature story, in an abstract sort of way.

The stone in the hole provides a cool, almost mysterious anchor to the small scene. I’m thinking it must have been placed there, OR… if near the waters edge, high tide and/or surf could have placed it as well.

The contrast works well between the stone and the metal too. The only suggestion I have might be to burn down the highlights in that stone a little tiny bit. Of course that falls in to the personal preference category. The only other small wish would be for a little extra breathing room top and right for the rusty hole. Not a huge deal or image breaker

Nicely seen! Oh, and I get your comment about being gravitated to the metal (man made I’m assuming) vs. being out in nature. Hey, I think we all gravitate to what catches our eye! And like I mentioned, it makes for a great nature story (metal overtaken by rust and time…)

Thanks for sharing

Thanks @Lon_Overacker

Yes it was by a river, the stone was there naturally.

Very cool, Dom. I really like the rust tones and the accent points the pebbles make on the structure. The stone in the hole is a very nice anchor for the image. Well seen and executed.

Well seen! I wondered how the rock got there, taking its part in an interesting scene, but then again, I wonder how I end up in some places also.

Might play with saturation of the rock. I like the coolness of it contrasting with the very warm surroundings.
