Rocks without end

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a very rocky area in our mountain preserve. I find it absorbing.

Specific Feedback

Mostly I’m interested in overall reactions but comments about anything would be welcome.

On this one I wanted fairly good focus throughout the image. I let my subscription for focus-stacking software lapse so I used Photoshop’s focus-stacker. I didn’t like the result. In the end I combined two images manually and found the result okay.

Technical Details

ISO 100, 50mm, f/16, 1/8th sec.

Nice rock jumble! I like the how the light is playing on the large rocks going diagonally through the scene. You might consider doing some burning above and below that area in order to accentuate that light. The B&W treatment works well here.

Thanks, Preston. I did some dodging and burning but I think it could use more.

Gorgeous silvery mid-tones! I like the arrangement of different sizes. I think @Preston_Birdwell has a good idea about some more burning.

Don,

Very cool! I think the b&w and tonal range look great here. And for a b&w, there’s actually a nice “glow” to this.

My first thought was - scale? This could be pebble size ships of stone, or these could be glacial-sized boulders! Likely somewhere in between. But for me, the lack of scale/reference adds a little mystery dynamic, which works really well.

I have no suggestions really. This is nicely seen, framed and photographed - oh, and processed too!

This is pretty cool. This has some features of a grand landscape. Maybe a small vignette to keep the eyes from escaping at the borders of the image?
