Rumpled and Rippled

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This is a small side channel on the Yellowstone river. The water was only about an inch deep, so the ripples on the bottom created extended “rumples” on the surface. The upper half includes reflections from the small willows along side.

Specific Feedback

The detailed ripple structure in the water caught my eyes, with the reflected colors adding interest. With moving water there’s always a challenge getting enough sharpness in the details without noticeable loss of sharpness across the frame, in this case my ss and f-stop looks to have worked well.

Technical Details

R5, 24-105 @ 105, 1/50 s, f/16, iso 800, tripod.

Appealing and interesting. This has a lot more water action than is usual for this type of shot, but I think the color palette works well to bring a more soothing element to the scene. Other than experimenting with sliders for texture with some masks, I can’t think of anything that could improve this. It’s an intriguing slice.

I find this interesting as a n abstract, Mark, because I can’t tell whether I’m looking at liquid or solid. The ripples look liquid but there’s a lot of graininess showing that I don’t associate with liquids. I had to read your description before I was sure what I was looking at. The composition works very well for my taste.

A really nice abstract shot, Mark. I too had to read your description to know what I was looking at. A great find and capture.

I also like this one. It helps that you were working with complementary colors. You have more sharpness throughout than I would expect with a shot like this.
