Running Hare

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I have been photographing some European Brown Hares for the past couple of years. They are shy and don’t like to be approached. I set myself a challenge of getting a decent shot of one of them running because they are fast and powerful and a joy to watch. It has not been easy. Finally this week the distance, the light and the angle came together. I got a series of shots in a 2 second burst.
Here’s my favourite. The head is as sharp as I can get it, and I am happy with a little motion blur in the legs. I have added a little Generative Fill on the right of frame to allow for a better framing

I understand, how difficult it is to frame and capture a subject like this. Ideally I would like to have a slower shutter speed so that BG doesn’t distract. You may experiment with different shutter speeds to get the right amount of blur.

Thanks for the suggestion Jagdeep, I can see how a slightly slower shutter speed could have helped in that way.
Unfortunately these encounters are quite rare, I’m not sure when I will get my next chance to try this!

I too have been enjoying jack rabbits in my area of eastern Washington state. We have the black tail jack rabbits. Also fast as lightning, its always a challenge, and a joy, to watch them running full speed. I usually sit in my car and just wait for them to come about eating, stretching…or doing their jack rabbit things. Your photo is just gorgeous. You captured their speed beautifully and with such clarity! I am loving it!!! Well done!

I’m pleased that you like it Judi.
I don’t think that it has any great artistic merit but as the culmination of two years of regular photo sessions with the hares I am very happy to have caught the “running moment” reasonably well.
