Lived to Run Another Day

Slightly different version to bring more attention to the hare:

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This was about 20 minutes after sunset at Lily Lake, cold and windy. A few minutes after seeing my first ermine at Rocky Mountain National Park last week, we saw it chasing this rabbit/hare in the scrub on the shore of frozen Lily Lake. We lost site of both for a few minutes, then the rabbit/hare moved into this somewhat sheltered area, no ermine in sight.

I think this is a snowshoe hare. It wasn’t white, but I’ve read they are keeping more of their summer brown/grey colors as the climate warms. Plus it had huge feet. If someone can confirm, I’d appreciate it.

Specific Feedback

I haven’t done much snow photography, so feedback on the snow tones. And then general feedback on the animal and brush.

Technical Details

Fuji X-H2S, 1/1250s, f/8, ISO 12800, 600mm

Fine shot! I too like to occasionally convert a capture into B&W that’s not benefiting from being in color. I’m going with snowshoe hare too.

Thanks @Dave_Douglass. I’m going to try a few other approaches too.

Debbie: i like the photo(s) as it shows the animal in its environment. I prefer the lower photo as there is more detail in the snow and the surrounding brush. In the upper photo, most of the brush is a dark mass and the detail in the brush is lost.

What a neat catch! That must have been a great trip!
I love the head-on stare with the eyes, and prefer the lighter version, as it seems more natural and less manipulated.
