Rushing Grebes in Black and White

Both are of rushing grebes - this time I have removed color to see the impact - to me there so much in the form of the grebes further boosted by that splashing

Karl, the second one works better for me in Band W. I think this is because of the stronger contrast between the pale parts and the dark BG. In the first shot, the BG is pretty pale, and I get the feeling that the colors of water and wings might be more attractive. I also prefer the synchronicity and separation of the second shot - makes it feel like they’re putting on a real show.

They’re both interesting in B&W as it seems to emphasize the textures in the birds and water. For my taste, I prefer the first, largely because the angle of light in the second seems to have done something to the eyes which are much clearer in the first.

The black and white works well with these birds. I prefer the second one. In general, I like birds moving left to right and these are coming at the viewer. Also, the water activity is more prominent in the second.
