Sand Waves Over Ice Beach

Loch Tulla, Highland, Scotland

I love to look for appealing patterns and though I had stopped to photograph some windswept trees I found my attention diverted by these intriguing reversed sand sculptures. Why reversed well normally the waves would be the sea and the flat surface the sand but here it is the ice “sea”, that lays flat and the breaking waves are the sand. I guess then the rocks must be offshore islands.

Just a very-appealing photo.

My eye is drawn to that rock - like a clenched fist. I love how the waves seem to recede slowly into the background. I’d be tempted to remove that wee stone in the LLC, but otherwise this has a real zing to it.

Wow, what a unique image, Ian. Well seen and well presented.

Ian,

Wow, what a great find - and I love your description of the reverse waves of sand - your explanation is clearly seen.

I’m glad Mike already mentioned the “clenched fist,” because that is exactly what I first saw as well. I was going to hesitate mentioning, because of the classic response by many, “now I can’t unsee that…” But here, I don’t think it’s a bad thing. That primary rock and form is quite powerful in this image - in fact, I’m wondering if it overrides the impact of the little waves of sand? But for sure, they both belong together and support each other.

All I can think to suggest is some crop - of which I’m not clear where those crop lines might be because that could impact the presence of the waves. In the end, as much as don’t favor the tall digital format, I think this is best just as presented. Excellent!
