Sandstone

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

Not even close to Sandstone actually. I was playing with blending modes on images of reflections of ship masts and rigging in the water and noticed a photo of White Sands on my auxiliary monitor background and wondered how they’d mix. This result was one of my favorites.

Specific Feedback

I did a bunch of adjustments in the lower left corner because it looked a bit washed out there. Does it blend with the rest reasonably well?

Technical Details

White Sands was taken with a Canon 5DIII and Canon 28-70 at 35 mm. The mast reflections were taken with a Sony A7Riv and 28-200 Tamron. Two of them had been combined using a forgotten blending mode yesterday and the White Sands layer was added using the Subtraction blending mode this afternoon.

Cool! You had me going there for a minute, Dennis. I was about to comment that that was a very strange geologic phenomenon. It does look as though it could be naturally occurring.

I think the LLC needs a bit of warming up or a hue adjustment. It looks a bit muddy compared to the rest of the frame.

Totally cool!! I love the squiggly lines that do indeed look like some sort of rock pattern. It’s a very delightful composition to explore.

What great fun to discover this kind of result!! Maybe just a bit of contrast in the LLC would work – that will also gove a light boost to saturation.

Really neat patterns here! Very complimentary colours, and framed perfectly.

Dennis: you had me fooled into thinking that this was a geologic formation. Had you not mentioned the LLC, I never would have thought it wasn’t original.
All in all, it is a very well made photo.
