Description
On our various holiday trips to the top of the South Island in NZ we always spend plenty of time photographing the large sand spit at the northern tip of the island. On one occasion we were there during a very windy and wet period, but conditions cleared overnight. Knowing that those conditions would have created innumerable patterns in the sand we headed out to the spit in the morning and then spent most of the day capturing a multitude of images. This is one of them
Specific Feedback
I have recently been trying to develop a sense of appreciation for abstract images. As this is not something I have previously paid much attention to, I am slowly feeling my way into the genre.
I would appreciate any comments on this current attempt.
Hi Phil,
I’m glad you are enjoying experimenting with this kind of thing. This is a wonderful abstract. On first look, I thought I was seeing a larger sand dune, but then some hint of recognition on the concentric circles of evaporation colors in the dark “dune” in the middle helped me see the scale as much smaller. Nice work here.

Hi Marylynne
Thanks for your comments. Yes, I am enjoying abstracts very much just now. Have just looked through your portfolio, you have some very nice work there. I especially like ‘The wind in his hair’ and ‘Greens and ice’, very nice.

I really like this photo.
I like the composition and the soft, well-balanced light. I thought the highlights might be a little “blown out,” but I see they’re just right.
Nice one.
Thanks for that. I made sure that the highlights weren’t blown out, but when I saw the posting it did look as though they might be. Nonetheless I aim for high contrast B&W in my images so there is always a little pure black and maximum white is just below being blown. Cheers.
