Dear Bryant Reed, Thanks for sharing this image. I find the scene interesting with its depth and visual rhythms created by the posts and your chosen perspective. Three questions: First, it seems as if you have opted for a restriction of the dynamic range, limiting it to Zone 3-7 or there about, even though white snow in direct light is part of the scene. Have you experimented with other renderings of the tonalities? Second, the cross light on the posts means that the part visible to the viewer is partly in shadow. However, it seems as if the shadows in these areas have been lifted to a considerable degree, so that the feeling of a rounded form is somewhat diminished. I wonder if you considered other ways of handling these shadows on the posts? Third, did you consider cropping out the area above the snow in the middle ground? If so, the space would perhaps be more focused on the posts? Again, thanks for sharing your image.

I think Leo’s on to something there. While the top and bottom of the image provide framing, they also detract from the most intriguing part of the image, the stumps and their shadows. I wonder about an image with the camera higher and focused on the stumps and shadows only?

Hi Bryant,
I like where you were going with this B&W image as the posts do impart a rustic feel to the scene. My thoughts pretty much echo @Leo_Catana and @John_Williams as I am loving those posts and their shadows. I also think their diagonal placement works well and adds a little visual tension. IMHO you could simplify this with a crop so more emphasis is placed on the posts. I hope you do not mind, but here is a rework with what I was thinking. Just my opinion of course. Good eye to spot this and share it with us!

I think both versions work really well !!! Great in Black and White!!!

Thanks! I like what you did. I didnt even think to focus on just a couple of the logs, but it works out well.

Thanks for the critique. It definitely gives me more to think about in the future.

Thanks for your feedback as well! I appreciate the help!
