Description
It was fairly foggy but, this owl was active. He/she would go from post to post and rest for a bit and then off again. Flew right over us, not more than 5-6 ft above. I got this as he was flying by. No background but I did brighten it. Almost high key. I had to add a bit of canvas in PS in front for better balance. This is an area where the Bald Eagles hang out as well as Northern Harriers.

Nice catch, Charlie. Is this a large crop? I’m asking because the eye looks nice and sharp, but the plumasge looks rather smeared and with that iso using DxO I can’t imagine losing that much detail given your settings.
Yes, it is a fairly large crop. DXO did not make a noticeable difference.
I have used Canon for years and recently switched to Micro 4/3rds OM system , primarily for weight saving. So far, I have found that the large crops do not stand up to the crops on a full frame. It is something that I will have to deal with as far as birds in flight are concerned, primarily. I think I could get better results with the OM 150-400mm lens but, $9000 is out of my price range. Also, it is just as heavy as my Canon equipment. AT 89, I feel the difference if I have to carry it any distance.
It will continue to be a work in progress.
Thanks,
Charlie
Hi Charlie
The fog could be some of the issue with the feathers. Water droplets on the feathers could make them look soft. Anyway really cool photograph of this Short-eared Owl.
Peter
Very nice flight shot, Charlie, and I like the high key aspect-really makes the owl shine.
Nice flight pose you caught Charlie with the raised wings. Interesting to see the feet hanging down and nice view of the eye. I can see the effect of the crop in the feather detail as well.
