Shy hummer

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

This hummingbird is a bit shy and hides in a large bush in our backyard. I had to handhold and try to get at least some of it in focus.

Specific Feedback

I included the original JPEG (I did not take RAW) to show how much I needed to process it. Is it OK?

Technical Details

Canon 7DmkII; 100/400 @ 400; 1/360th; spot; 5.6; daylight WB.
I only use Elements 21 and a very old version of Zoombrowser (from Canon) to process.

Jim, a wonderful “peek-a-boo” portraiture of this hummingbird. The processing is the right choice in my mind. The original stems are a real eye draw for me. … :sunglasses:

Jim, I love the soft yellows and peach colors in this. They frame the little hummer perfectly. I like the little peek we get from it. Nice job processing. My OCD is saying it need to have a bit cropped off behind the bird and a bit lees above. Not sure that is really necessary though. . . .

Paul and Ed, Thank you for your nice comments.

Jim, the result of your processing is a lovely portrait of this hummer. It’s head is nice and sharp and it fits very well with the surrounding colors.

Hi Jim! This is a lovely portrait of the hummer. Your processing is excellent. Excellent detail in the hummer and everything else nicely soft. Great job! Congrats on the well deserved EP too!

Jim, this is a delightful image of this little lady. You were able to get just enough sharpness on the eye and beak to provide a focal point, and the soft surround contrasts that to perfection.
Excellent image and very well-deserved EP !

A great example of using simple gear creatively for a powerful result. The bird really does look shy. Congrats on the EP.

Mark, Steve, Sandy and Mike, Thank you for your nice comments. I am very surprised to have received a EP. Mark, Thank you.
