Snapping a Branch in the Blink of an Eye

This bald eagle was searching gathering twigs and branches for its nest. Minutes before it had snapped a branch off a dead tree while in flight. Here it lands briefly to snap a branch with its beak. I have another shot the moment before the branch snaps and the bird is not blinking which I will try and post with this.

Specific Feedback Requested

I am sincerely hoping for your thoughts on how I might improve this photo.
E.g. do you like the composition? I have used the shot where the 3rd eye is visible; I will add another shot the moment before the branch snaps and the bird is not blinking. Which do you prefer?

I have cropped the top right to avoid a bulky and dark branch. I am learning how to use a brush mask so maybe I can extend the top right corner.

I have raised the exposure and the shadows slightly. Please comment on the colours, light, texture etc if you have thoughts.

Thanks very much

Hi @Robena.Sirett . Welcome to NPN. Thanks for sharing your image in the avian critique.

I like the action captured. The wing position is nice.

Processing looks pretty good with decent detail in the darker plumage. The head detail is not as good and I’m guessing there is detail there in the raw file that could be pulled out.

I much prefer the image without the nictating membrane showing over the eye although that image doesn’t look quite as sharp.

Composition: I find it far too tight in the frame. You’ll find that is a common critique from me on many avian images. I wrote an article here on NPN about including the environment, context matters. More of the frame on this image would provide even more context. Yes, the background is busy with branches and twigs, but that is really the reason for the image showing the eagle gathering nesting material.

Again, thanks for sharing and we look forward to more of your work and participation on NPN.

Thank you very much. I appreciate your detailed feedback!

I like that you loaded both photos, because they show so clearly the instinctive eye protection at the moment it is needed. Otherwise, Keith’s comments are excellent, as is your shot!
