Snow Birds - Rework

Critique Style Requested: Standard

The photographer is looking for generalized feedback about the aesthetic and technical qualities of their image.

Description

I took this photo years ago and keep coming back to it from time to time. I waffle about how I feel about it and, yet, there is something that draws me still. I like the birds very much. The scene was quiet and the snow gave it a minimalistic feel, but the birds add a touch of color and liveliness.

Specific Feedback

I’d appreciate your thoughts on the image and any suggestions that might improve it.

Chris, this is a nicely minimalist view of winter. To me, it feels like the colors are off, maybe too much yellow. The flock of Robins feeding in the tiny strip of grass speaks to how Robins may overwinter or are one of the first birds to return as winter fades.

@Mark_Seaver Thanks. I did a repost. The edit is subtle, but I think it helps.

Hi Chris,
I can see why you keep coming back to this image as I would as well. This does have a wonderful minimalistic feel to it that @Mark_Seaver has already mentioned. I think your rework with his suggestion is an improvement in removing that yellow cast. I am also enjoying the muted color palette as it fits the scene beautifully. Very nicely done.

This is really nice. Quite unique, actually. Don’t think I’ve seen a photo with the same concept. Simple yet effective. I really love the birds and the liveliness they impart to the image.

@Michael_Lowe Thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated.

@Ed_Lowe Thanks so much for your comments.

I like the retouch, Chris. I think the reduction in the yellow cast (or color temp or whatever you dialed back) made a difference. The scene is quite lovely. The high key treatment works well for me. There is brightness along with the cold, and the robins, so we have the promise spring. It tells a story and has some symbolism. Nice work. I’m glad you dug around in your archives and shared it with us.

@Marylynne_Diggs Thank you for your great comments.

I love this for its uniqueness Chris. The “two images in one” effect is quite striking, and it took me a minute to absorb the full story here.

When I first saw this my mind wandered to a black and white, but once I realized the foreground had the robins, with their red breasts, I realized color was essential.

At first glance this is a simple image, but then there is that “Wait, what?” aspect. I bet if this was hung large on a wall somewhere, people would really pause to look at it and sort out the different parts.

@John_Williams Thanks for the breakdown of your thoughts on this image.
